White Lotus Temple
Wat Santi Wanaram (วัดสันติวนาราม(ดงไร่))
An internationally important pre historic archaeological site and museum.
Why Go?
- Very photogenic ceremonial hall on an island
- Peaceful temple grounds
- Good chance of seeing ceremonies
This temple is just 6km from Ban Chiang, and so is worth a look when you are in the area. I found it when I was very bored one day and searched the map for places to visit! The main feature is a temple building on an island in the shape of a beautiful white lotus, reached by a causeway.

Inside the lotus temple is beautifully decorated and a lovely spot to chill out. From the island you can look across to another island which is covered with wild birds including egrets and cormorants.
Back on the shore the temple gardens are attractive and small meditation huts (known as kuti) are scattered around the temple grounds.
Further around the grounds is a stagnant pond containing a very large crocodile — an incongruous and rather unsettling sight.
Location & Map
About 50–55 km East of Udon Thani city
It’s a very short drive from Ban Chiang. Important: Don’t follow Google Maps directions directly to the temple; use the entrance shown on the map and follow the internal access road.
