Udon Thani City Museum

พิพิธภัณฑ์เมืองอุดรธานี

A municipal museum set in a beatifully restored mansion in a park.

Why Go

  • Well presented story of Udon Thani
  • Good English and Thai information
  • Beautiful location

The Udon Thani City Museum is housed in a beautifully restored colonial-era building near Nong Prajak Park and offers a broad overview of the region’s past. Exhibits cover local history, archaeology, culture, natural science and geology, and there are displays on the city’s founder and heritage. The building’s architecture alone is worth a look, and its location makes it easy to visit after a stroll in the adjacent park.

You first enter a new annex building next door. I love the architecture of the annex, in subtle rusted steel. From the annex you walk through the exhibitions which tell the story of Udon chronologically from the time of the dinosaurs to recent times.

There are very few historic artifacts inside, a contrast to places like the museums at Khon Kaen and Ban Chiang. Possibly thats because its not a “National Museum”? But it seems strange to have a museum which is 90% audio visual or twentieth century recreations and just a few historic treasures.
